Combine our Award-winning “Geneva to Alpe d’Huez” (“2011 Trip of the Year” awarded by Outside Magazine” and view two crucial stages of the 2012 Tour de France in superb locations… this trip will allow you to do it all!

The riding is quite challenging and requires an excellent fitness level: All the top mythic climbs of this part of the Alps are included: Aravis, Saisies, Madeleine, Telegraphe, Galibier, and of course the legendary Alpe d’Huez. The rewards are priceless: money can’t buy the exhilarating feeling of achievement one feels at the end of this trip!

This tour is organized on a semi-self-guided basis: There will be a chauffeur-driven vehicle on all rides. Extra support will be provided.

Itinerary
July 9th: Arrival in Geneva - Transfer to Neydens

Arrive at Geneva International Airport. We will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel located right outside Geneva. Dinner is included.
July 10th: Neydens to Le Grand Bornand (90 km or 55 miles)

Day off for the pros… Not for us! Today’s destination is Le Grand Bornand (in the heart of the Aravis mountain range), home of the Reblochon cheese (locals' Powerbar!) and where you'll dine and stay overnight. On your way, you will ride through the very scenic Chablais region (our playground; our office is nearby!). The ride includes two major climbs: the steep Saleve mountain (1,280 m or 4,200 ft.) with it unobstructed views of Lake Geneva and the mythic Col de la Colombière (1,613 m 5,290 ft). Dinner and accommodations are in Le Grand Bornand.
July 11th: Le Grand Bornand – Grésy-sur-Isère (70 km or 44 miles)

You’ll leave the very picturesque Le Grand Bornand and get on the classic “Route des Grandes Alpes,” a mountain route that links Lake Geneva (Thonon-les-Bains) to the Mediterranean Sea (Menton). After climbing Col des Aravis (1,486 m or 4,460 ft.), you’ll plunge down to the valley before attacking the second climb of the day: Col des Saisies (1,657 m or 4,970 ft.). Gravity will take you down to Albertville. From there, the River Isère will show you the way to Grésy-sur-Isère where your hotel is located.
July 12th: Loop around Grésy-sur-Isère. Viewing of stage 11 “Albertvile – La Toussuire”

Our route notes will include viewing point suggestions and estimated time of passage. Our prime recommendation is to climb up Madeleine (1,993 m or 6.540 ft) and see the pros at the top. Not only will you experience one of most prestigious climbs of the Alps, but chances are that you’ll view the pros in the best possible environment. You can of course choose to skip Col de la Madeleine follow the valley before climbing La Toussuire and watch the finish of today’s stage. As a self-guided rider, you have this choice!
July 13th: Grésy-sur-Isère – Valloire (102 km or 64 miles). Viewing of stage 12 “Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne - Annonay-Davezieux”

Etape starts are always fascinating… An early ride will allow you to get to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in time for the customary Tour de France morning sign-up. Make sure you pack your camera. This laid-back ritual is your best chance to take close-ups and have a chat with the pros’ entourage. After a few miles on the valley floor, you’ll tackle the easy Col du Télégraphe (1,566 m or 4,700 ft.) and reach the beautiful resort of Valloire where your hotel is located.
July 14th: Valloire – Alpe d’Huez or Oz-en-Oisans (85 km)

Valloire is located at the foot of the Galibier pass (2,642 m or 7.926 ft.), the mammoth climb of the day. Riding this legendary climb is magic: graffiti from past Tours will remind you that this road has seen many showdowns since it was first used by Tour de France riders in 1911. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Meije glacier and with a memorable 40-km (25 miles) descent to Bourg d’Oisans, before charging up the 13-km (8 miles) climb to Alpe d’Huez. The time to beat: 37’35”, a record held by Marco Pantani since 1995.
July 15th: Departure

After breakfast, depart Alpe d’Huez at the time of your choice.. Note that transfers to Grenoble or Geneva can be arranged on request.
