Tour De France Mythic Climbs: Alpe D'Huez, Croix De Fer, Telegraphe And Galibier - 4 nights/5 days

View Map
Galibier is one of the highlights of this tour.

Some of the Tour de France's most difficult climbs are featured in this challenging tour.

The final climb of this tour is Tour de France's most famous climb: the mythic Alpe d'Huez and its 21 hairpins

Organized on a self-guiided basis, this cycling tour will let you experience challenging climbs and thrilling downhills.

We invite you to discover the battleground where attacks have been waged, battles have been won, and wars have been lost! This is the epic terrain which has determined most Tour de France.

The mountain passes in this area are among the toughest you can find in the French Alps. They provide numerous opportunities to test your climbing limits and admire the spectacular alpine landscapes.

This self-guided tour is ideal for those of you who will be participating in La Marmotte or in the 2012 edition of L'Etape du Tour. Alternatively, it can be combined with our other French Alps tours:

For a longer trip, riders may consider our award-winning Geneva to Alpe d'Huez which partly follows the Route des Grandes Alpes. New this year, cyclists may extend the fun and keep riding all the way to Nice.

Longing for an easier trip with views over these amazing Alps? We highly recommend our 3-Lake cycling tour which follows the valleys linking Lake Geneva to Lac du Bourget to Lake Annecy... stunning views are guaranteed!

For groups of 6 and more, we organize custom tours based on riders' requirements (type of hotels, mileage, daily climbing, etc...). These can be guided or self-guided. To get started, check out a a few of the many custom tours we've organized for private groups and cycling clubs. The next step? Just fill out our custom tour request form.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Grenoble

Arrive in Grenoble at the time of your choice. Meet with our local correspondent in Grenoble to go over itinerary. Transfer to Alpe d'Huez where you'll dine and overnight. Note that if you wish to do some riding on arrival day, we'll transfer to Alpe d'Huez or nearby (we use two different locations for this tour). Dinner and overnight at your hotel.
Day 2: Suggested Loop

You will be provided with a few suggestions for today's tour. Our favorite is a 60 km (38 miles) ride that will take you on quiet roads with breathtaking views over the Oisans area and the nearby mountain peaks. This short loop will allow you to gauge yourself before riding the giant passes of the coming days. Longer rides will be suggested should you wish to cover more ground. Overnight at your hotel. Dinner is at leisure.
Day 3: Alpe d'Huez (or nearby) - Valloire (111 km or 70 miles)

After breakfast, barrel down from your hotel all the way to the valley floor before attacking the Col de la Croix de Fer (2,067 m or 6,200 ft.) rated "HC" ("Hors Catégorie" means "Beyond category" by the Tour de France organizers. The Col du Télégraphe (1,566 m or 4,700 ft. rated as a second category climb) will take you to Valloire at the foot of Galibier. Dinner and overnight at your 2-star hotel in Valloire.
Day 4: Valloire - Alpe d'Huez (85 km or 53 miles)

Your route will take you to Col du Galibier (2645 m or 7,900 ft rated "HC") before going down the Col du Lautaret all the way to Bourg d'Oisans. From there, the 16-km climb to Alpe d'Huez (1,850 m or 5,550 ft.) is your mission. The time to beat: 37'35", a record held by Marco Pantani since 1995. Dinner and overnight at your 3-star hotel.
