Description

Wake up in the beautiful city of Bordeaux, European capital of culture renowned for music, architecture, and of course, wine! Our Médoc itinerary leads you north of the city into the Médoc Peninsula, a flat, vineyard-covered landscape resting between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde Estuary. The Médoc’s oceanside setting would make for poor grape-growing; luckily for the world, the region’s particular terroir is magnificent, and nearly all of Bordeaux’s prized appellations are made here.

Your route isn’t all about wine, however! Enjoy flat, traffic-free roads through stretches of countryside, charming villages, lakes, forests, and quaint port towns of the Gironde.

Itinerary

D1Arrival in Bordeaux and transfer to Pian Médoc

Upon arrival in Bordeaux by rail or air, you will be transferred to Pian Médoc, where you can relax and indulge in exquisite tastes of French cuisine and Bordeaux’s wines. Why not try the local red wines of Haut-Médoc, take a dip in the pool, or stroll across the 6 acres of parkland? Everything you may enjoy today is only a small taste of what’s to come!

D2Le Pian-Médoc — Moulis-en-Médoc along “La Route des Châteaux” 39 km/24 miles; 100 meters/325 ft of climbing

Follow the “Route des Châteaux” today to some of the world’s most famous vineyards (and, of course, chateaux!). From Pian Médoc to the base of the Gironde estuary at Macau, you will pedal towards Margaux, Moulis-en-Médoc, and St Julien. Among other castles, you will ride by the 17th century Chateau Beychevelle. Your day’s destination is a charming guesthouse in the heart of the “Médoc Rouge.

D3Moulis — Saint-Yzans 58 km/36 miles; 210 meters/690 ft of climbing

Today’s ride may be the longest, but it’s the richest in sites and scenery. Cycling from village to village, vineyard to vineyard, and castle to castle, you will reach Pauillac, the crown jewel of the Médoc. Pauillac features no fewer than 18 spectacular chateaux, including the world-renowned Chateau Mouton Rothschild. After exploring, you can relax in a charming guesthouse nearby, completely surrounded by vineyards.

D4Loop from Saint-Yzans along the Gironde Estuary 40 km/25 miles; 120 meters/390 ft of climbing

Enjoy an easy ride along the left bank of the Gironde. Your detailed itinerary will take you through miniscule fishing ports such as St Christoly and La Marechale, where slow-moving sailboats lend even more beauty to the scene. Further on, you’ll come across the former site of “L’Arbre de Richard,” a giant poplar tree that blew over in the early 1800s. A lighthouse was built in that spot, now called the Pointe de Richard, which offers a magnificent view over the Gironde.

D5Transfer to Bordeaux train station or airport (or optional additional day)

After breakfast, we’ll transfer you to Bordeaux. An additional night in Bordeaux can be arranged, if you wish.
