For decades, the northeastern coast of Spain has been a tourist destination – but for centuries, Catalonia has been a thriving region with its own distinctive language and culture. Based mostly in the Emporda region of Catalonia, cyclists on this tour will take safe routes to explore both the rocky coastline and the rural landscape. Every city and village has something to offer, whether it’s a medieval castle or a gothic cathedral, or even some archaeological digs at ancient Greek and Roman towns.

The seafood in coastal villages is nothing short of sublime, and Catalan cooking is sure to satisfy cyclists after a busy day. This leisurely tour is the perfect vacation for families and riders who enjoy getting lost in another culture.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Torroella de Montgri
Upon arriving in Torroella de Montgri, you'll be ushered to your room at the excellent Hotel Moli del Mig, a former 15th century mill that's been converted into a modernistic, bike-themed lodge which includes its own on-site bike mechanic. After settling in, you'll meet with our local expert to review your itinerary in thorough detail and, if needed, be fitted for a bike.
Day 2: Torroella de Montgri - Sant Pere Pescador (40 km or 24 miles)
Upon exiting Torroella de Montgri, you'll pedal to La Goal beach, near the mouth of the Ter River, and experience the magic of northeast Spain's Mediterranean coast. From there, you'll veer inland and loop around the Mongri Massif and the pedal through Bellcaire d'Emporda, a tiny village steeped with medieval history. You'll then return to the coast at l'Escala, a small fishing village famous for anchovies, and then continue on to Sant Pere Pescador while passing St. Marti d'Empuries and the Ruins of Empuries which date back to 550 BC.
Day 3: Loop around Sant Pere Pescador (44 km or 28 miles)
Today's 44-kilometer ride will center around the Emporda Wetlands. Established in 1983, this natural park represents the third largest wetland area in Spain, serving as the home for 320 species of birds. Paths weave in and around lagoons and marshes, assuring you of optimal bird viewing opportunities, From here, you'll continue on to Castello d'Empuries. This rural village's Saint Maria church, towers literally, as a 14th century monument to Gothic architecture. If time allows, you'll have the option of touring the region's famous olive fields and vineyards located at the foot of the Alberes Mountains. At night, you'll again lodge in Sant Pere Pescador.
Day 4: Sant Pere Pescador - Madremanya (approx. 40 km or 24 miles)
Today's ride captures the rural charms of Spain's Baix Emporda region. In between rolling farmlands, you'll pass through Sant Miquel de Fluvia, a speck of a village that features a Romanesque monastery, and Sant Mori, famous for its 15th century Gothic-Renaissance castle. At night, you'll retire in Madremanya, a sleepy Medieval hillside village framed by sunflower fields.
Day 5: Madremanya - Calella de Palafrugelli (approx. 43 km or 26 miles)
Today, you'll pedal back to northeast Spain's Mediterranean coast, wandering through the villages of Cruilles, Ullastret and Peratallada. All three serve as showcases for Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Peratallada is especially well preserved, featuring narrow streets hemmed by stone buildings with arched windows, making every turn camera-worthy. You'll also have the option to visit La Bisbal d'Emporda, the region's capital city, famous for pottery. Calella de Palafrugelli, an old fishing village full of rocky coves and crescent beaches will play host for the next two nights.
