Enjoy delicious Catalan fare with your riding buddies

Explore historic Catalan villages on your tour
Prepare your taste buds for a seven-day cycling tour focusing on the culinary delights of inland Catalonia. There’s more to Catalonia than the coast, as you’ll see when wheeling through natural parks lush in greenery. The never-ending sunshine and mineral-rich soil from (now extinct) volcanoes lend themselves to growing the sumptuous vegetables gracing the dinner table. Medieval villages with narrow cobblestone streets are home to cafés, farmhouses and restaurants serving traditional meals. Girona, the antique capital of Catalonia, is where classic and modern tastes converge — but local produce is always the focal point! Because this is a leisurely self-guided tour, you’ll be able to set your own pace and indulge in whatever you fancy, whether historic monuments or local pastry shops! Try food that appeals to you — you can’t beat the freshness of Spanish olive oil, wine and cheese at the source.

This tour is a very easy one. If you wish to ride longer distances and cover more ground, we recommend our Bike and Beach bike trip, which also takes place in the same area.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Girona

Located in Spain’s northeast corner, just an hour north of Barcelona and about 30 km (19 miles) from the coast, Girona is easily accessible by train, plane or car. Besides its accessibility, Girona makes an ideal city to start your tour because it typifies the regional diversity like no other city. Your hotel is conveniently located in the incredibly well preserved downtown, near all major attractions including the Arab Baths, the Rambla de la Llibertat and the Cathedral.
Day 2: Transfer to Olot; Ride Olot — Sant Miquel de Pineda (22 km/14 miles, 370 meters/1,215 ft of climbing)

Meet our local rep in Girona for your transfer into the heights of Garrotxa county, in a region made up of ancient volcanic cones. Once you’ve been outfitted with bikes, perhaps the rich natural beauty and historic structures will inspire you as they did a group of 19th century artists who became the Olot School. Revel in a peaceful ride through the forest, where the hosts of a restored farmhouse will greet you and lead a tasting of Ratafia, a complex locally produced liqueur.
Day 3: Loop from Sant Miquel de Pineda (25 km/15 miles, 650 meters/2,125 ft of climbing)

The southern Garrotxa’s volcanic cones are part of a natural park that forms the backdrop of today’s loop. Feel free to stop wherever you’d like, be it for a roadside picnic or a fantastic photo opportunity! When you arrive back at the farmhouse, your hosts will share traditional cooking techniques at a lesson followed by a meal of farm-fresh produce.
Day 4: Sant Miquel de Pineda — Girona (43 km/27 miles, 200 meters/640 ft of climbing)

Return to Girona along a cycling path made from an old railway track — it leads right into the heart of the city! If you didn´t have time upon your arrival, explore the cobbled streets of the old Jewish Quarter, walk along Roman ramparts, and marvel at 12th century Moorish architecture for a well-rounded sampling of Catalonia’s mixed heritage. Tonight you’ll enjoy a wine and olive oil tasting at one of the city’s chic eateries.
Day 5: Train to La Flaça; Ride from La Flaça to Girona (25 km/15 miles, 285 meters/935 ft of climbing)

You will start off the day with a short 10-minute train ride to Flaça train station where you pick up the route on cycle paths. Today’s itinerary carries you through Catalonia’s medieval villages such as Roura Blanch, a fortified village whose sensational, 700-year-old market square will serve as the backdrop for a very memorable lunch. Dinner, too, is sure to impress — enjoy classic Catalan cuisine at a mountaintop restaurant hidden away from busy city life.
Day 6: Loop from Girona with Vall de Llémena (27 km/18 miles, 415 meters/1,360 ft of climbing)

Enjoy a ride to the northwest of Girona in an area known as Vall de Lllemena. Well off the beaten path, the valley looks much as it has for many previous centuries. Extinct volcanoes hide tiny villages like Canet d’Adri, where you might wish to stop for lunch. Tonight’s meal will be the icing on the cake of your entire tour as you enjoy a modern take on traditional dishes at one of Girona’s finest restaurants.
Day 7: Departure

Following breakfast, you’re free to depart at your leisure.
