Riding the Tourmalet

This unprecedented tour takes on special significance as France’s most famous cycling event celebrates 100 years of racing through the Pyrenees Mountains. Over the course of five days you’ll witness Stage 16 (Bagneres-de-Luchon – Pau) and Stage 17 (Pau – Col du Tourmalet), two of the race’s most legendary mountain courses that often play pivotal roles in determining the winner of the “Grande Boucle.” You’ll also experience these routes by bike, highlighted by historic Tourmalet, considered as one of the top three climbs in France, as well as Aubisque, a shockingly scenic ride accented by craggy, cloud-scraping peaks and plummeting, lush green valleys thick with pastoral mystique.

Depending on personal preference, you can choose each day between guided or self-guided rides. If you opt for self-guided, we’ll provide you with suggested routes, maps, and all other pertinent information, including contact numbers should questions arise. A support vehicle accompanies all guided tours. Historic Lourdes, located at the foot of the Pyrenees, will serve as your hub during this one-of-a-kind tour, requiring no hotel transferring.

Itinerary:

Monday, July 19th: Arrive in Lourdes.  Pro-stage is “Pamiers – Bagnères-de-Luchon”
Upon arriving in Lourdes, whether by plane or train, one of our representatives will be there to escort you to your hotel. (If your travel plans involve arriving in Pau or Toulouse, please alert us. We’ll handle all of your transfer arrangements to Lourdes). After settling in, you’ll meet with our mechanic for bike tuning and fitting. Prior to dinner, one of our representatives will go over your itineraries, detailing routes, guided and self-guided options, Tour de France viewing and more. Dinner will take place in Lourdes in a nearby restaurant

Tuesday, July 20th:  Pro stage is stage 16 “Bagneres-de-Luchon – Pau”.  Our ride is Soulor/Aubisque and back. Viewing at the top of Aubisque.
Choices, choices, choices. The decision is yours. You can ride on your own, or pedal with us. If you choose the self-guided option, you’ll be outfitted with a detailed information kit, which does include immediate contact numbers should questions arise. All others will rendezvous in the hotel lobby at 9 a.m. with our guide. Regardless of which option you choose, both rides will ascend Aubisque Pass, the second most visited mountain in Tour de France history. This relatively short climb (72 kilometers - 44 miles) is a perfect introduction ride. From atop, you’ll watch the dramatic, final climb of Stage 16. After the race passes, you’ll coast back into Lourdes and have the evening to spend as you please.

Wednesday,  July 21st:  Rest day for the pros.  Our program:  Classic Tourmalet ride with support vehicle
While the pros rest, we’ll ride. Again, the option is yours between guided or self-guided. If you opt for the latter, you’ll have several routes to choose from, ranging from short to long. Hautacam, the shorter route, is where Lance Armstrong made his epic mountain climb, pulling away from the pack and increasing his lead by four minutes in extreme wind and rain, during the 2000 Tour de France. The pedal, to the top of the Hautacam ski area, covers 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) with a 1,635 meters (5,364 feet) climb. The longer ride ascends Tourmalet, considered one of the Tour de France’s top three climbs. Mythical in stature for its alpine beauty, our route snakes through the heart of the Pyrenees, covering 105 kilometers (65 miles) and featuring 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) of leg-churning climbing. Riders choosing the guided tour, will climb Tourmalet, while accompanied by a support van. Regardless of which option you choose, both Tourmalet rides will mirror the exact route the Tour de France followed the day before from Sainte-Marie de Campan. On the return you’ll enjoy a wild-eyed descent into Luz-Saint Sauveur.

Thursday, July 22nd:  Pro-stage is stage 17 “PauCol du Tourmalet” .  Ride to Tourmalet and back.  Viewing at the top of Tourmalet
You self-guided mavericks will again be served a plate full of options. You can pedal 15 kilometers (9 miles) to Argeles-Gazost and watch the Tour de France zip past and still have plenty of time to ride back to Lourdes and catch the finish from the comfort of your hotel. Or, you can pedal with the guided tour and follow the race live. We’ll climb the “Luz-Saint-Sauvere” side of Tourmalet, several hours in front of the pro racers. This will give you front row viewing of the race’s pivotal, final mountain stage from atop a stunning alpine setting. We hope to return the same route we climbed. But this may change due to road restrictions imposed by race officials. For dinner we’ll taxi to Saint Savin, a picturesque village neatly tucked in the green folds of the Lavedan Valley.

Friday, July 23rd:  Departure
After breakfast, we’ll shuttle you, at the time of your choice, to the Tarbes/Lourdes airport. Or, if needed, we can make special transfer arrangements to Pau or Toulouse.
