| Itinerary: | |||
| Day 1: Arrive In Bayeux Arrive in Bayeux at the time of your choice. We recommend an early arrival so as to allow for plenty of time to visit Bayeux: the Tapestry which describes the invasion of England by William the Conquerorand the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, its medieval cathedral, and the Museum of the Battle of Normandy. Overnight at your hotel located in the center of town. |
|||
| Day 2: Loop around Bayeux (50
km or 32 miles) Following your detailed directions, you will ride northbound on quiet roads along the Seulles river through small villages, passing on your way some sites that are worth a short stop (such as the medieval Creuilly castle) all the way to the small town of Courseulles-sur-Mer, a perfect lunch stop before proceeding on along Gold Beach (British sector) to Arromanches where the must-see Landing Museum (Musee du Debarquement) should not be missed as it clearly explains the D-Day landing operations through a series of exhibits and movies. On your way back, do not miss the German Battery of Longues-sur-Mer before riding back to bayeux following the Aure River. |
|||
| Day 3: Bayeux to Les Veys (46
km or 29 miles) The small Drome river will lead you to the picturesque fishing village of Port-en-Bessin (the biggest fishing village in Normandy) before veering west along Omaha Beach (American sector). Must-see sites include the US cemetery at Saint-Laurent where 9,386 American soldiers rest by the landing sites where an estimated 2,500 allied soldiers lost their lives on D-Day. Further on, La Pointe-du-Hoc, a cliff heavily defended by the Germans and captured by US soldiers on D-Day. Your accommodations are located in the village of Les Veys in the Nature Park of "Les Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin." |
|||
| Day 4: Loop around Les Veys
(48 km or 30 miles) Although WWII sites are still the focus of this loop, nature will take a close second as your ride will take place entirely in the Nature Park of "Les Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin," the landing area of the mass parachuting of the 82nd airborne on the night of June 5. This is where Sainte Mere Eglise is located, a site made famous by the extraordinary story of John Steele who landed on the church steeple. Possible lunch stops include cafes and restaurants chockfull of regional cream- and cider-based specialties. |
|||
| Day 5: Les Veys to Le Breuil-en-Bessin
(42 km or 26 miles) Riding through rural countryside, populated with orchards and cows, away from the crowds, you will reach Le Breuil-en-Bessin where your last accommodation is located. Although it is your tour and as a self-guided rider you choose the sites you'll visit or pass, we recommend a stop or two at a working farm for a taste of the celebrated Norman cider and calvados. |
