Self-guided cycling tour: Start any day April through October.

Daily mileage: 50 to 85 km
(32 to 53 miles). Additional sections can be suggested to add mileage.

Tour departs from Orange and ends in Avignon.

Accommodations in 2- and 3-star properties.

From 955 euros per person based on double occupancy in 2-star and 3-star properties.

Cycling Provence is mostly done on quiet roads even during the tourist season.
Cycling up Ventoux is often included in our custom tour.
Serious riders love Provence! Ventoux--one of Lance Armstrong's favorite climbs--represents a hard to pass up challenge for any deservedly named "cyclist."

The region is so culturally and geographically diverse that your daily ride will transport you to an area that is so staggeringly different from the one you just pedaled away from a few hours before--a Provence feature that always amazes first time visitors.
This itinerary can be customized using different properties, with lower or higher mileage, etc... Don't hesitate to ask us if we can deliver your custom dream trip...

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Orange
Arrive in Orange at the time of your choice. Check in at your 2-star property located in downtown Orange. Meet our local contact to go over itinerary. Hand-out of all necessary materials. Overnight in Orange.

Day 2: Orange - Sault (85 km; 55 miles; challenging)
A leisurely warm-up will take you through Vaison-la-Romaine known for its excavated Roman sites (most still lies underground; Vaison-la-Romaine is France's largest archaelogical's site). Cycling will be done through the "Dentelles-de-Montmirail," a gorgeous area covered with pine treest, oak trees, and Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards such as Rasteau and Cairanne where the very unusual "Sensory Tour" is located. Cycling up Ventoux is next! The reward is an unobstructed view over Provence! A well-deserved downhill will take you to the lavender-growing area of Sault where your hotel is located.

Day 3: Sault - Apt (78 km; 49 miles)
Twists and turns will take you to the Luberon Regional Park with its perched villages such ochre-colored Gordes and magnificent Roussillon (two villages that bear the label "One-of-France's-Prettiest-Villages"). You will cycle through or by some of the villages made famous by Peter Mayle in "A Year in Provence:" Menerbes, Bonieux, Lacost, etc... Your hotel is located near Apt.

Day 4: Apt - Lourmarin (78 Km; 49 km)
Highlights will include an area known as "Colorado Provencal:" a red-colored region of cliffs and interesting geological formations. Quaint and picturesque villages will be ridden through: Rustrel, St. Saturnin-les-Apt, Buoux and finally Lourmarin and its castle where your hotel is located.

Day 5: Lourmarin - St. Rémy-de-Provence (72 km or 45 miles)
A very scenic road will take you from from Luberon to Alpilles, two dramatically different areas. On your way to the Alpilles--a low mountain range--you will ride through Eygalière, a village that has recently topped the list of "France's most desirable places to live in" compiled by a leading French magazine. The scenic "Destet road" will then take you to Saint-Remy. This is where Van Gogh lived for two years and realized some of his most famous paintings. You will overnight in Saint-Rémy.

Day 6: St. Rémy-de-Provence - Arles (67 km; 42 miles)
A few miles after leaving St. Rémy-de-Provence, you'll probably want to stop and visit Les Baux-de-Provence, an extraordinary site with a towering fortress that offers unobstructed views over the whole area (On very clear days, one can see all the way to Corsica). You'll then ride Fontvieille where famous French writer Alphonse Daudet's windmill is located before entering Camargue, a Natural Preserve and home to a wealth of wildlife. Arles will be your final destination.

Day 7: Arles - Avignon (51 km; 32 miles)
The mileage may be on the lower side, but chances are that you'll want to take a stroll through the city of Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features remarkable sites (among them is a well-kept Roman theatre) and museums as well as a lively street life. Your ride will then take you through Tarascon where one of France's best-kept medieval castle is located before entering "La Montagnette" (the "small mountain") where the Abbey of St. Michel de Frigolet is located. Avignon and its extraordinary heritage will be your home for the night.

Day 8: Departure from Avignon
After breakfast, depart Avignon at the time of your choice.
