For a longer and easier tour, you may want to consider our longer 7-night/8-day tour "Along the West Coast" which also starts from Bastia.
Our tour starts from Bastia, which can be easily accessed via ferry from nearby terminals in France and Italy. Once you arrive, get yourself settled in at the hotel, and your experience of Corsica has officially begun! As the capital of Northern Corsica and the island’s main port, Bastia has a lot for you to see and do. This town is the perfect prelude to an intense Corsican experience, with the vibrant atmosphere and rich history contributing to its distinctive culture. Explore the historic Citadel Terra Nova for the afternoon, walking down the winding streets and revelling in the beautiful Church of Sainte Marie which lies at the centre. The old port cannot be missed, with exquisite sights and cuisine to boot, so why not enjoy the local food and excellent wine by the sea? Wander and take in the island atmosphere for a little longer before resting up and preparing for the start of your ride tomorrow.
The tour begins as you set off northwards along the coastal road towards the end of Cap Corse (the Cape of Corsica). Steep cliffs rise up from the sparkling sea in the rugged and wildly exhilarating seaside landscape, as you pedal and enjoy the natural beauty which surrounds you from the seat of your bike. Crossing the island towards the west, you’ll navigate through several small mountain villages which contain a multitude of opportunities to practise your French and refine your palate. As you descend from the Cape, maquis shrouded hills and Genoese towers will greet your eyes as if a scene from a post card.
Approaching Canari, travel through the many beautiful seaside villages and say hi to their welcoming locals whilst reflecting on the island’s unique personality. Canari itself is a lovely town by the sea, and don’t miss seeing the church "Eglise de Santa Maria Assunta" or trying the delicious seafood. If you’re up for a challenge, the optional longer ride will take you further north and through a larger variety of Cap Corse’s towns and nature. Whichever option you pick, you will experience the powerful nature of northern Corsica as well as the picturesque views on the West Coast.
Today you will begin riding along more of the Cape’s gorgeous west coast, hopefully with its famous maquis in bloom. Beginning in the direction of St. Florent, you have the option of going through Patrimonio, the wine capital of Corsica, or a splendid and less-trodden back road over the Col de Santo Stefano. Both routes have awe-inspiring natural scenery and are well set up for cyclists, so take your pick. As you progress down the coast you will pass through St Florent, an enchanting town which must be explored by keen travellers - from golden beaches to eclectic and vibrant streets, there is something to entertain everyone. The citadel in particular should not be missed, with its incredible sea views and amazing architecture. From St Florent, you will set off across the island again to arrive back at the bustling east coast in the village of Lucciana, nestled on the hillside above the shimmering water.
Note: Wine tastings can be arranged by request in the cellars of Patrimonio.
Say goodbye to your bike after breakfast and farewell Lucciana. Your cycling experience of Corsica has been short and intense, and you deserve a break to reflect on what you’ve done. Stay for another day, or leave the island and share your exciting achievement with family and friends. Transfers to the port or the airport in Bastia can be arranged, contact us for more details.
