Your trip begins in lively Vitoria-Gasteiz, which is easy to reach by plane, train or bus. If you're sufficiently well rested after your arrival, take the time to explore the Old Town, where you can make a visit to some wineries, stroll around the medieval quarter, and admire the city's cozy, narrow streets and stunning architecture. Make sure to get a good night's sleep to prepare for your cycling adventure tomorrow!
Following the detailed directions we will provide you with, you will leave Vitoria-Gasteiz and soon find yourself pedaling northward on quiet secondary roads. Take in the stunning and varied countryside of the region, with its farmlands, forests, and lakes along the route. Once you have completed the final climb, you will reach the village of Maetsu, where you can unwind and enjoy the calmness of this cozy and friendly village.
Today, you will be able to rest your legs a little, as your ride follows a downhill course. For the first part of the ride, you can simply let the river Ega show you the route! Along the way, take in the charm of the small villages you’ll pass through - plenty of opportunities to take a welcome coffee break or a leisurely lunch. Before you know it, you'll arrive in the scenic town of Estella. While you're there, make the most of your evening by exploring its historical sites. If time allows, visit the Church of San Pedro de la Rúa, explore the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, and take a leisurely stroll along Plaza de los Fueros, the main square of Estella, surrounded by historic buildings and cafes.
Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before saddling up your bike. The serious climb of the day doesn’t come until the last part of your journey. About halfway through your ride today, you’ll be able to stock up on snacks from Puente la Reina-Gares, which is bursting with local delicacies to try. You will finish today in Pamplona, a city known the world over for its annual Running of the Bulls festival. Furthermore, being on the Camino de Santiago, this town has had a tradition of catering to travelers for centuries.
After bustling Pamplona, you’ll soon be riding through the peaceful and grandiose landscape of this part of Spain. On your left, not so distant, is the Natural Park of Aralar, a protected area renowned for its diverse flora and fauna. Your destination, Lekunberri is the ideal gateway to explore the natural beauty of this area. Meeting the strict criteria set by the World Tourism Organization, Lekunberri has been honored as one of the "Best Tourism Villages" in 2021.
The first stretch of the ride involves some climbing, but once the climb is done, you can coast up to the halfway point of your ride. The rest is flat. Your destination is San Sebastian, known for its beautiful beaches, culinary delights, and vibrant atmosphere. We recommend arriving early enough to explore it, whether you are interested in history and architecture, or beach activities. The rest of the day is yours to spend however you please!
After breakfast, depart San Sebastian at the time of your choice.
