Description

Linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, the Canal du Midi is one of France’s most remarkable engineering achievements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stretching 260 km across the south of France, it offers a wonderful way to explore the region by bike, following peaceful, tree-lined towpaths and quiet country roads through beautiful landscapes, vineyards and charming historic villages.

From Montpellier to Toulouse, you’ll discover the region’s rich heritage and diverse scenery. Highlights include the Mediterranean port of Sète, Agde with its impressive fortified Romanesque cathedral, Béziers and its remarkable Roman bridge, and the spectacular medieval walled city of Carcassonne, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way, you’ll also encounter the impressive Fonseranes Locks, the tranquil waters of Lake Saint-Ferréol and picturesque villages that capture the character of southern France.

Beyond its history and scenery, the journey offers plenty of opportunities to experience the region’s local culture and cuisine. From traditional Languedoc specialities to Castelnaudary’s famous cassoulet, you can savour the flavours of the south at welcoming restaurants selected for their quality. With its combination of historic landmarks, scenic cycling and the relaxed pace of life along the canal, this trip is a wonderful introduction to the charm of southern France.

A reverse version of the itinerary is also available (Toulouse to Montpellier) at the same price.
