Description

Cycling along the Portuguese Camino de Santiago is an incredible way to experience one of Europe’s most historic and spiritual routes. This journey follows the closest possible path to the official Camino, meaning you’ll share the trail with pilgrims from around the world, each on their own adventure. Whether you're looking for a personal challenge, a cultural immersion, or simply a break from the everyday, this is an experience that will stay with you forever.

Unlike traditional cycling tours, the Camino teaches you to slow down. Most walkers take weeks to complete the journey, soaking in the landscape, history, and camaraderie along the way. On a bike, you’ll move at the perfect pace—not too fast, not too slow—giving you time to meet inspiring travelers, appreciate the region’s beauty, and embrace the rhythm of the journey.

This is a self-guided tour, which means you have the freedom to organize each day as you wish. Want to stop for a long lunch? Explore a charming village? Chat with fellow pilgrims over a coffee? It’s your adventure to shape, with the comfort of knowing everything is arranged for you.

Your journey begins in Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city, and takes you through Portugal’s stunning Minho region before crossing into Spain’s Galicia. Along the way, you’ll uncover ancient legends, medieval towns, and the deep-rooted traditions of the Camino. The adventure culminates at the magnificent Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where the relics of St. James rest—a moment that many describe as deeply moving, no matter their reason for taking the journey.

Itinerary

D1Welcome to Porto

Your adventure starts in Porto, one of Portugal’s most beautiful cities. A member of our team will meet you at your hotel to provide a warm welcome, introduce you to your bikes, and hand over all necessary travel materials. Take some time to explore Porto’s lively streets and riverfront before your journey begins. From the start, you'll see fellow travelers setting out on their own pilgrimages, each with their own story to share

D2Porto to Barcelos 55km

Leaving Porto, you’ll cycle through a mix of cobbled streets, country lanes, and scenic trails, passing through charming villages and lush green landscapes. The route closely follows the true Camino, meaning you’ll encounter many pilgrims along the way. Along the way, you’ll cross historic Romanesque bridges and arrive in Barcelos, a medieval town known for its legendary "galo" (rooster), Portugal's best known symbol. Take time to wander its medieval quarter and soak in the atmosphere, meeting like-minded travelers sharing this incredible path.

D3Barcelos to Ponte de Lima 34km

If it’s a Thursday, you’re in luck—it’s market day in Barcelos! Leaving town, the landscape becomes even more peaceful, with small villages and traditional farms lining your route. The beauty of traveling by bike is that you can move at your own pace—fast enough to cover ground, yet slow enough to experience every area you'll ride through. Stop at the 12th-century Ponte das Tábuas, a perfect rest spot before pedaling through vineyards, forests, and orchards. As you approach Ponte de Lima, the oldest village in Portugal, enjoy breathtaking views of surrounding mountain peaks and chat with fellow cyclists and pilgrims on the way.

D4Ponte de Lima to Valença 36km

Today’s ride takes you through the heart of the countryside, with ancient stone bridges, sleepy hamlets, and even a few waterfalls along the way. You’ll meet pilgrims from all walks of life, some walking for weeks, others just beginning their journey. A challenging mountain climb awaits, but the views make every effort worth it. You’ll pass through Rubiães, home to a Romanesque church and historical landmarks, before descending into Valença, a fortress town marking your last night in Portugal.

D5Valença to Pontevedra (Crossing into Spain!) 58km

Tchau Portugal, hola Spain! Crossing the River Minho into Spain, you’ll arrive in Tui, where its impressive cathedral greets you. As you cycle onward, you’ll continue to encounter fellow Camino travelers, sharing stories and encouragement. After passing through O Porriño, the journey leads you into peaceful countryside and the pine-scented Chan das Pipas forest. From Redondela, join the famed Central Camino route, cycling through Arcade—famous for its oysters—before reaching the lively squares of Pontevedra, perfect for an evening of tapas and wine, where you'll meet even more travelers celebrating their progress.

D6Pontevedra to Padrón 40km

Pedal through rolling countryside and shaded forests towards Caldas de Reis, where a stop at its famous thermal springs is a must. Here, you might find fellow pilgrims resting their weary feet, taking in the same tradition that has soothed travelers for centuries. From here, continue through charming villages and the peaceful Valga forest before reaching Padrón, a town deeply tied to St. James' story. The mix of locals, pilgrims, and cyclists makes for a truly vibrant and unforgettable atmosphere.

D7Padrón to Santiago de Compostela 25km

Your final day of cycling is short but full of anticipation. Ride through serene countryside and charming hamlets before glimpsing the towers of Santiago’s cathedral from Milladoiro. Along the way, conversations with fellow pilgrims will remind you of the collective spirit of this journey. After one last climb, roll into the heart of Santiago de Compostela, where your journey reaches its grand finale at the iconic cathedral—an unforgettable moment of achievement, shared with so many others who have followed the same path.

D8Departure

After breakfast, take one last stroll through Santiago’s historic old town before continuing on your journey—whether homeward or onward to new adventures. If you have time, savor a final café con leche in the main square, reflecting on the unforgettable encounters and the sense of camaraderie that made this journey so unique.
